Building Public Support through Community Relations


We live on an island, which in addition to great weather year round and amazing beaches means that everyone knows everyone and that building a sense of community is more important here than anywhere else in the world.

For a company or organization who is new to the area and planning a project this means focusing on building public support through community relations.

On Wednesday, October 26, join PRSA Hawaii for our October program at The Plaza Club to hear how Disney and the U.S. Army have used community relations to build support.

Presenters for this month's program include:

Todd Apo, Director of Public Affairs, Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina

Todd Apo, Director of Public Affairs, has been with Aulani since November 2010. In his role, he is responsible for community, media and government relations, as well as all internal and external communications and Aulani's outreach programs. Prior to joining Aulani, Todd was Vice President of Corporate Operations with Ko Olina Resort, responsible for the development and operations elements of the 642 acre resort. He was part of the team that toured Disney representatives in 2006 when they first came to look at Ko Olina property, and prior to joining Aulani, he worked with Disney on the planning and development of Aulani. From 2005-2010, he also served on the Honolulu City Council, representing the West Oahu region.


Frank Cho, Chief of Community Relations, U.S. Army, Pacific

Frank Cho serves as the Chief of Community Relations for the U.S. Army, Pacific - the largest Army Service Component Command - which encompasses more than 35 nations and nearly half the world's surface. He is a seasoned Public Affairs professional with nearly 20 years of experience as a journalist and public affairs professional in both the private and government sectors.

Frank has extensive experience in media and community relations. He joined USARPAC in 2010 after seven years as senior vice president and managing director with Communications Pacific, a public relations company in Honolulu. Frank has also worked as reporter and editor for The Honolulu Advertiser, Pacific Business News, Bloomberg News and The Environmental News.

Born in Honolulu, Frank is a reserve Captain in the Hawaii Army National Guard where he serves as the Commander, Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron 299th Cavalry Regiment based in Hilo, Hawaii.

Due to the increased cost of doing business, reservations to PRSA Hawaii programs made via credit card will be assessed a nominal processing fee.


  • The Plaza Club:$6 parking validation for 2 hours, paid in cash at the door; thereafter, $2.75 per half hour to booth attendant upon departure.
  • Harbor Court Municipal Parking:$0.75 per half hour up to 2 hours; thereafter, $1.50 per half hour paid to booth attendant upon departure.
  • Other parking garages are also available in the area.

Reservation and Cancellation Policy:
Advance registration will close at 3 p.m. on the day prior to the event. After that, a $5 walk-in fee will apply. Due to out-of-pocket expenses incurred, there is a $5 cancellation fee for reservations made via credit card; no refunds will be issued for cancellations received after the deadline; and no- shows will be invoiced.
