Communication 'Catch-Up' With the City & County


Following our popular "Lessons from the Lege" program in March, PRSA Hawaii is pleased to present an informational talk-story program highlighting key issues and hot topics at the City and County of Honolulu. Nicole Velasco, newly appointed executive director of the Office of Economic Development, and Shawn Nakamoto, information office of the Honolulu Board of Water Supply, will share their insights on current events at the City and County and their respective roles.

Nicole A. Velasco, Executive Director, Office of Economic Development, City and County of Honolulu

Nicole A. Velasco serves as the Executive Director of the Office of Economic Development. On behalf of the City & County of Honolulu, she is responsible for cultivating tourism and hospitality, agriculture, film, and other industries; advancing small businesses; strengthening relationships with state, military, federal, and international partners; and coordinating cultural and community festivals and special events. Velasco is the youngest appointed Cabinet member of the Caldwell Administration. Prior to assuming her new role on Friday, May 1, Velasco served as the Executive Secretary of the Neighborhood Commission Office. Velasco has also worked as an analyst for both the Hawaii State Office of the Auditor and the Finance Committee of the Hawaii State House of Representatives. Previously, she served as a Government Affairs Advisor at Ashford & Wriston, LLP, representing a variety of clients with legislative concerns in the State of Hawaii. Velasco is a graduate of Princeton University and Punahou School. 

Shawn Nakamoto, Information Officer, Communications Division, Honolulu Board of Water Supply

Shawn Nakamoto, APR joined the Honolulu Board of Water Supply in December 2014 as its information officer, leading a nine-member team tasked with the agency’s communications, media relations and public education efforts. Nakamoto is responsible for developing strategic communications plans to address Board of Water Supply initiatives, community and consumer affairs, legislative affairs, public relations and public education. Previously, Nakamoto served as director of communications for Hawai‘i Pacific Health, the state’s largest private health care system comprised of Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children, Pali Momi Medical Center, Straub Clinic & Hospital and Wilcox Health on Kaua‘i. Nakamoto also served as an integrated strategies manager at Kamehameha Schools and has held public relations positions with the University of Hawai‘i System and St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawai‘i. A member of PRSA’s Public Affairs and Government section, Nakamoto holds the APR (Accredited in Public Relations) designation from the Public Relations Society of America.
