February Program: Is Old Media The New Media?



Are traditional media outlets becoming the 'new media'? Today, newspaper journalists and columnists write 'new media' blogs, in addition to their 'old media' stories, while evening newscasts are live-streamed on the Internet. Hear from some of Hawaii's leading media outlets about how media has changed, the similarities between new and old media, and how PR pros can leverage these new opportunities.

Our panelists include:

Genie Garner is News Director at KITV. She previously worked in Hawaii from 1989-1991 as a producer for KGMB News. Since that time, she has held news management positions in a number of markets, including assistant News Director at KMOV-TV (CBS) in St. Louis and most recently as News Director at WHAS-TV (ABC) in Louisville, Ky. Garner is a native of Southern California, graduated from UNLV.

Chris Archer led the Hawaii News Now team through its major transition in October of 2009. He came to Hawaii in May 2006 as News Director at KGMB, where his team successfully launched its morning show - Sunrise on KGMB - and helped the station climb the ratings to #1 in the morning, at 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. Previously, Archer worked his way up in the KRON newsroom in San Francisco starting as a production assistant in 1997.

Mary Beth Lohman is the new publisher of Pacific Business News, only the fifth since it was founded in 1963, and is responsible for all of the company's news, advertising and business operations. Since 1996, she has worked as the circulation director, overseeing the sale and distribution of PBN's print and online products, as well as the marketing of the newspaper and its business recognition events. At a time when many newspapers are seeing steep declines in paid circulation, Lohman and her circulation staff have been recognized for expanding PBN's circulation every year from 2003 through 2008. A challenge for PBN is constantly drawing in new readers to the newspaper and pacificbusinessnews.com.

Melissa Chang, APR has more than 20 years experience in marketing and public relations. Her blog, Urban Mix Plate, is one of the more popular blogs on the Honolulu Advertiser. She is also a food reviewer (not restaurant critic) for Metromix.com and contributes to the Honolulu Advertiser's Island Life section and Custom Publishing Group. Melissa is currently a freelance writer and independent marketing consultant, specializing in integrating the new social media with traditional media to maximize clients' marketing efforts. She was also named one of the "Top 20 Social Media Geeks in Honolulu" by Bytemarks and "Honolulu's Best Twitter" by Honolulu Weekly.

$5 for 2 hours parking validation. Pay cash at the door for parking validation; thereafter, $2.50 per half hour paid to booth attendant upon departure.

Harbor Court Municipal Parking
$0.75 per half hour up to 2 hours; thereafter, $1.50 per half hour paid to booth attendant upon departure.

Other parking garages are also available in the area.

Reservation and Cancellation Policy:

Advance registration will close at 3 p.m. on the day prior to the event. After that, a $5 walk-in fee will apply. Due to out-of-pocket expenses incurred, there is a $5 cancellation fee for reservations made via credit card; no refunds will be issued for cancellations received after the deadline; and no- shows will be invoiced.
